Justin Bieber Beats Lady Gaga In YouTube Video Popularity -- For Now ...
'Baby' has surpassed 'Bad Romance' in views, but the battle continues.By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga has been on an epic, record-setting tear, packing 'em in at concerts, selling millions of records and recently smashing previous marks for downloads, Facebook fans and total online video views.
But a girl can't have it all, right? After a heated battle, Gaga went down in rare defeat on Thursday, when Justin Bieber surpassed her to set a record for the most-watched music video in YouTube history. At press time, Bieber's "Baby" collabo with Ludacris had logged 245,746,720 views, pushing past Gaga's epic "Bad Romance" clip, which was not far behind with 245,596,709.
Now, given Gaga's rabid fanbase of little monsters, there's no doubt this pitched battle will continue and perhaps see a few more lead changes, but for now, the Biebs has emerged victorious.
Bieber, in the midst of doctor-imposed vocal rest while on tour, reacted to the news with delight, tweeting on Thursday, "what is goin on with the 'Baby' video on YouTube is crazy ... I started on YouTube so the support ... well I just need to say thank u."
Showing he was raised right and is a good sport, he followed that tweet with a flip of his bowl cut to his rival, writing, "someone just showed me and I just need to say that @ladygaga is an incredible artist who have great respect 4. And her vid is incredible ... so it doesn't matter who has more views, what matters is that we have incredible fans that support us ... that I'm sure we are both grateful 4."
Then again, winning feels kinda sweet, so he did do a bit of Twitter victory lap. "So thanks ... like I said, I started on YouTube so ... WOW!! Love u and wish u all the best in each and every one of ur lives. Thanks Beliebers!"
And in case the race got close again, his next post was a link to the video.
Trailing way behind on the list of most-watched music videos on YouTube are: Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." (138.6 million), Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" (131.8 million), Miley Cyrus' "7 Things" (125.2 million), Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" (117 million), Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" (101.7 million), Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" (100.1 million), Vanessa Hudgens' "Say OK" (89.1 million) and Timbaland and OneRepublic's "Apologize" (87.4 million).

Kanye West is roaring back into the spotlight with a series of much-publicized, surprise visits to technology and media companies from Facebook and Twitter to XXL magazine. At Friday's (July 30) visit to Rolling Stone's headquarters, the lyricist broke down the inspiration behind his forthcoming effort.
"Everyone says all great art comes from pain but I think my greatest art comes from excitement and joy. It's a completely different perspective about being extremely excited about stuff that is only cool to me," West enthused in a The Louis Vuitton Don also discussed some of the things that get him amped. "Like, when I tweeted, 'What's your credenza game?' I was very excited about that credenza," West smiled.
Although the outspoken star entered the game as a rapper, West has toyed with the boundaries of hip-hop in his recent music, most notably with his vocally-driven, Auto-Tuned, 2008 effort, 808's and Heartbreak. The lyricist revealed during his Stone visit that he sought to widen the scope of his work beyond hip-hop.
"It was important to not be limited by the art form of rap but to have rap bring it to another level," West said. "Is it rap or is it poetry? Is it spoken word? Is it [a] speech?"
West also spit some of his favorite bars from his untitled fifth studio album which juxtaposes a range of contradictions.
"You're heaven, you're my angel/You're my heaven, you're my hell/You're my now, you're my forever/You're my freedom, you're my jail/You're my lies, you're my truth/You're my war, you're my truce/You're my questions, you're my proof/You're my stress and you're my masseuse," 'Ye rhymed.
West reflected on his role as an artist and said he feels an obligation to open the eyes of his fans.
"There's people throughout history that their responsibility is to be conveyors of truth onto [the] next generations," West said. "I feel like I'm that type of person that has to carry on the truth and tell the story not history."
In addition to looking out for the next generation, West lamented his perceived lack of swagger in the game and called for artists to reach for the "greatness of rock 'n roll."
"They're all scared. All the people that could be real rock stars just get scared," West said. "It takes so much for a me or an Eminem to come back and embrace and say, 'You know what? We have to deliver this on a major level to make a difference.'"
West's album is expected to be released in September.

Travie McCoy Joins Rihanna, Ke$ha On Last Girl Tour
Gym Class Heroes frontman hits the road with the ladies for tour kicking off July 2.By Mawuse Ziegbe
Travie McCoy
Gym Class Heroes' Travie McCoy will hit the road with pop princesses Rihanna and Ke$ha on this summer's Last Girl on Earth Tour, which kicks off on July 2 in Auburn, Washington. The tour will crisscross the U.S. and Canada and wrap up on August 28 in Syracuse, New York.
McCoy's addition to the lineup comes after the tour was originally announced in April as a girl-power outing, with Young Money's Nicki Minaj as one of the openers. Minaj later dropped out of the tour, saying she was going to focus on wrapping up her debut instead.
"Barbz I'm sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi's tour. I've decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand," the star tweeted just days after the tour was announced.
McCoy will rock stages this summer in support of his solo debut, Lazarus, which features the single "Billionaire" with Bruno Mars. The hip-rock star — who goes by Travie instead of Travis for his solo work — premiered the video for his new single "The Manual" featuring T-Pain and Young Cash online on Friday.
Travie recently told MTV's Buzzworthy that the solo effort is just one of the many side projects he tinkers with while still being a part of the Gym Class Heroes.
"Since the beginning of Gym Class Heroes, we've all kind of had side projects," he said. "This is just an extension of that."
Last Girl on Earth tour dates with Rihanna and Ke$ha according to McCoy's label:
»7/2 - Auburn, WA @ White River Amphitheatre
»7/4 - Vancouver, BC @ General Motors Place
»7/6 - Calgary, AB @ Pengrowth Saddledome
»7/9 - Sacramento, CA @ ARCO Arena

Michael Jackson's Party Anthems: DJ Drama, Jermaine Dupri, More Reveal Their Favorites
'Michael Jackson's music can absolutely crush a party!' Q-Tip tells MTV News.By Shaheem Reid

Friday (June 25) marks the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death. Fans across the globe are still heartbroken that the King of Pop is no longer with us, but this weekend, they will celebrate his memory by singing his songs and dancing to his music, just like Jackson wanted them to do while he was still here.
We spoke to several DJs and asked them which of MJ's songs are their favorites to play in the club. " 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,' " Jermaine Dupri said Friday morning. "Because it embodies what clubs in the '80s were really about, and you can hear it. For the three minutes you throw that on, you start believing you're back there. At least I do."
"Probably 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),' " DJ Drama said via phone from India. "It gets all the drunk and hot girls excited!"
" 'P.Y.T.,' " DJ Envy agreed. " 'Beat It,' 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.' "
Q-Tip, who became a legend in hip-hop for his abstract rhymes, had a few nonconventional choices. "Michael Jackson's music can absolutely crush a party!" said Tip, who DJs all around the world. "The obvious records are 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' and 'Rock With You.' My personal faves are 'Life of the Party,' 'Get on the Floor' and 'Body Language.' Also, 'Show Me the Way to Go.' "
"My two favorites are 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' and 'Billie Jean.' They both are so timeless," said DJ Kut, who spins on WBLS in New York. "They even make me wanna dance, and I don't dance!"
"Definitely one of my all-time favorites that can work at any party in the world is 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,' " Miami's DJ Affect said. "The title explains it best. ... That record is a party starter! Followed up by 'Billie Jean,' which always gets the ladies moving on any dance floor. To conclude the night around 4:55 a.m. in South Beach, 'Dirty Diana' is the perfect go-to record. MJ will truly be missed and never forgotten."
Lil Jon went with the classics: " 'Billie Jean.' Soon as the drums drop, people go nuts and they love to sing the hook! 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin',' I use the 'ma ma say, ma ma sa' part all the time to get the whole club crazy. 'Rock With You,' I drop the a cappella, and everyone is singing, from thugs to nerds. Then I drop the beat and send the club into a frenzy!"
"You can go to any club on the planet and hear 'Billie Jean,' 'Beat It,' " said DJ Jazzy Jeff, who released the Jackson tribute mixtape He's the King, I'm the DJ last year. "You can hear 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.' Those are his main, main super staples; an Eskimo in Alaska knows those."
MTV will be remembering the life and music of Michael Jackson all weekend. Don't miss the one-hour special "Michael Jackson's Influence on Music," airing tonight at 6:30 p.m. on MTV.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Oprah Top Forbes 2010 Celebrity Power List
James Cameron, Sandra Bullock, Britney and Madonna also named most powerful celebs of 2010.By Gil Kaufman
Lady Gaga
Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images
Lady Gaga has won a lot of accolades during the past year and met some pretty impressive dignitaries, but crashing the Forbes magazine annual World's Most Powerful Celebrities list puts her in some truly rarified company.
The singer, who launched her latest iteration of her never-ending Monster Ball Tour in Montreal on Monday night, debuts on the list this year at #4. She landed there thanks to high marks for her Web visibility (#1 on the list) and a $62 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010, $31 million of which came from touring (after a gross of $95 million), with much of the rest courtesy of deals with Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, Monster Cable and MAC.
Gaga joins a top 10 that is dominated by women, including the once-again #1, Oprah Winfrey, who retook her top rank thanks to $315 million in earnings after ceding it last year to Angelina Jolie (now #18). The list ranks celebs based on earnings over the previous 12 months, as well as visibility in print, TV, radio, online and social media.
Beyoncé slipped up two spots to #4 this year, with $86 million in grosses thanks to a 93-date world tour, deals with Nintendo and L'Oreal and her House of Dereon fashion line. The still resurgent Britney Spears leaped from #13 to #6 this year, banking $64 million, most of it thanks to a world tour that grossed $130 million and deals with Elizabeth Arden and Candie's.
Madonna slipped seven spots down from last year's #3 ranking to #10, but at 52, she still had the fourth-highest-grossing tour of the year, which rolled up more than $138 million in gross receipts, as well as significant publishing royalties, including cash from an all-Madge episode of "Glee."
More than 30 years into their career, U2 went from zero to #7 on the list, mostly courtesy of a massive — currently mothballed — world tour that raked in more than $311 million in gross box office, as well as lucrative merchandise sales, copious radio play and a steady-selling back catalog that earned them more than $130 million.
With a $210 million payday from his #1 smash "Avatar," director James Cameron (#3) had a very good year, unlike disgraced golfer Tiger Woods, who hits #5 with $105 million in earnings amid high press rankings, mostly for his infidelity scandal. The top 10 is rounded out by Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock (#8, $56 million), who made headlines for having two hit movies, "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side," as well a divorce from ex-Jesse James. And at #9 is Johnny Depp, who banked $75 million, mostly due to his work in "Alice in Wonderland," which grossed $1 billion worldwide, making Depp the only actor to headline two billion-dollar films.
Taylor Swift made it onto the list for the first time, at #12, thanks to her status as the most-played artist on radio in 2009, multi-platinum album sales, and big endorsement deals with Sony and CoverGirl that netted her $45 million. She's just ahead of Miley Cyrus (#13), who took in a not-too-shabby $48 million. Beyoncé's other half, Jay-Z, also made a giant leap this year, jumping from #32 to #15 with a hit album, his investment in the 40/40 club chain and the Broadway show "Fela!," the New Jersey Nets, and the Blueprint 3 tour, which grossed more than $1 million per show.
Also new on the list this year are the Black Eyed Peas, who debuted at #16 thanks to a $48 million year pumped up by sponsorship deals with Target, Honda, Bacardi and Apple. Singer Pink crashed the party at #27 in her debut year, with $44 million, much of it courtesy of her smash international tour.
Other musicians on the list include: Bruce Springsteen (#17), Coldplay (#35), the Jonas Brothers (#40), Diddy (#68), Lil Wayne (#74) and Akon (#80).
"Twilight" star Robert Pattinson also makes his first appearance on the list, coming in at #50 with $17 million in earnings, followed by co-star Kristen Stewart at #66 with $12 million in earnings. The woman who started it all, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, hits the #59 spot with $40 million in pay thanks to the $1 billion in box office the movies have earned so far and continued strong sales of the books from the series.
Former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell earned a spot behind Madonna at #11 with a hefty $80 million payday, while fellow "Idol" cohort Ellen DeGeneres (#23) earned $55 million from her stint on the reality show and her syndicated daily talker. "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest weighs in at #44 with $51 million from his variety of TV hosting gigs, radio show and producer credits on reality shows.

Lady Gaga: From Pop Deity To Human Being, One Reality Show At A Time
Bigger Than the Sound wonders: Is Gaga the most everyman pop star around?By James Montgomery
Lady Gaga
Photo: Gabriel Bouys/ Getty Images
By now, you are probably aware that Lady Gaga is an unstoppable moneymaking machine, an insatiable studio junkie, a high-ranking Polaroid executive, an honorary Hair Wars champion, a burgeoning fashion icon, the next Madonna, more popular than Barack Obama and quite possibly a member of the Illuminati.
But, chances are, you didn't know that she's also a big fan of A&E's "Intervention."
Or maybe you did. After all, she tweeted about it Tuesday, calling the show "informational, heartbreaking and inspiring." And while the idea of Gaga sitting in a hotel room, hair done up in Diet Coke can curlers, cigarette sunglasses still smoldering on the bedside table, watching Allison huff duster (and subsequently walk on sunshine) is rather amazing, it's also important too. Because it's just another step in the latest chapter of her career: her continued transformation from otherworldly pop deity into an actual human being.
And perhaps I am reading entirely too much into one simple tweet about a phenomenally addictive reality show (about addiction), but now — more than at any point in her time in the spotlight — Gaga seems determined to be one of us. She chugs beer at baseball games (albeit while wearing a leather jacket and a bikini), crushes BBQ at Boston dive bars and spends her off-days in New York cooking for her dad, drinking and watching episodes of "Cops" (something she made a point of mentioning onstage at her tour kickoff in Montreal). She spoke openly and frankly about her ex-boyfriend in an interview with Rolling Stone, and her newest song — a piano ballad called "You and I" — seems to be very much about reconciling with him, in perhaps the most un-Gaga setting imaginable: a dark and dirty bar. (It's also worth noting that the songs sounds a whole lot like a Billy Joel B-side, and who's more everyman than the Piano Man?)
At this point, I don't know what she could possibly do for an encore — maybe start Tivo-ing "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" or take on a disastrous adjustable-rate mortgage? — but the fact remains that right now, despite all her trappings, Gaga is probably the most openly human pop superstar on the planet (or at least the most open). Can you imagine any of her contemporaries — the Beyoncés and Britneys and Madonnas of the galaxy — giving the finger to photographers at a Mets game or slaving away in the kitchen? Of course not. Would any of them go to such great lengths to shed the veil of celebrity and seem so downright normal? Not in a million years. Lady Gaga has basically graduated to a whole new level now, one that's either so far above — or so far below — anything anyone else has ever attempted that it seems positively groundbreaking: She is the cursing, drinking, red-meat-devouring deity. She is, in a sense, just like you or I.
But is any of it intentional? I'm not really sure. When I interviewed Gaga last year in San Diego, I asked her if she were "in character" all the time or if there were moments when she was just, you know, normal (i.e. When she went to the grocery store, did she wear those Alexander McQueen armadillo heels?). She responded, quite matter-of-factly, that Lady Gaga wasn't a character; it was who she was, and that, if there was any kind of concept behind her career, it was — as she put it — to "create an atmosphere for my fans, where they don't leave loving me, they leave loving themselves."
So even back then, the template appeared to be in place. Gaga is not untouchable, she is not perfect — she's not supposed to be. And while some might find the notion of their pop royalty slumming it down here with the rest of us rather uncouth, I for one find it rather admirable. It's not careerist or calculated; it's just Gaga being Gaga. And, I suspect, it's just one of the many reasons her "little monsters" love her so.
And, if she wants to continue down her current path, might I suggest "Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch," currently airing on VH1? It's waaay everyman.

Almost a week after Marvel debuted the first footage from "Thor" at Comic-Con, the video has popped up online. Now it's not only the lucky nerds that swooped into San Diego last weekend who get to gawk over the incredibly cool footage, which includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor laying down the hurt on some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, a close look at the mythical gods of gold-plated Asgard, and Thor swapping spit with the scientist played by Natalie Portman.
The Con simply delivered an embarrassment of "Thor" riches, and to help everyone get a handle on what was revealed, we've gathered all the available info right here. Read on for everything you need to know about "Thor" at Comic-Con.
How Hemsworth Prepared: Vikings and Mike Tyson
Early in 2009, the Australian-born Hemsworth was unknown on American shores. Then he wowed audiences with his turn as James Kirk's dad in "Star Trek" and won the hearts of Marvel execs, who gifted him with the role of Thor. How did Hemsworth prepare for the role? Not so much with comic book reading about Norse gods but with historical research about the Vikings.
"They live with this fearlessness, which for me was a lot of the angle I came at Thor with," he told us. "He does reckless sort of things, but his heart is in the right place. He believes it's right. He's not just a madman."
When it came to creating Thor's fighting style, Hemsworth at first turned to former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. "Mike Tyson is very low to the ground, with a big open chest and big shoulder swings. Very sort of brutal but graceful at the same time," he explained. "As we shot stuff, we realized that it's virtually impossible to do that. The costume is pretty limiting with the movement, so there was a lot to work around."
Thor's Look: Armor, Hammers and Nakedness
As we saw in the Con footage, Thor is cast out of Asgard and lands on Earth, stripped of his armor and his all-powerful hammer. And without that hammer, Hemsworth admitted he felt more than a little vulnerable on set.
"You feel naked without it after holding it for a while," he laughed.
The actor went on to reveal that filmmakers employed various hammers depending on the needs of each scene. "There were a few different versions for different shots — the close-up one and the stunt one," he said. "The main one was very heavy, a beautifully polished, metal, wood, leather-looking thing. It was an impressive thing."
Equally impressive for the actor was Thor's costume, which had Hemsworth feeling nothing short of empowered. "I put the costume on for the first time and had the camera test and [co-star] Anthony Hopkins was there with me," he said. "We looked at each other and he said, 'God, there's no acting required here, is there?' "
Destroyer, Loki and Odin's Throne
Marvel's "Thor" effort at Comic-Con wasn't all about the central god, of course. Out on the floor was Odin's golden throne and the Destroyer armor in all its metallic glory. Hemsworth also gave us a sneak peek at Thor's battle with the nefarious Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
"We had a big rehearsal process with one particular fight scene we were doing and the whole time, Tom had his staff and his Loki helmet on with the horns," Hemsworth said. "He always wore it in rehearsals while he moved, so basically he's sweating and he can't hear anything because [the helmet] is extraordinarily heavy. He had this kind of crazy look in his eyes, and the whole time I was thinking, 'He's going to kill me!' He's swinging his staff and catching me in the legs and in the fingers and I kept thinking, 'He's going to hurt somebody.' "

My Gap Jacket
Justine, my sugar mama, sent me this lovely sun bleached denim jacket from Gap:
I'm going to be honest, I never would've bought this in the store and I didn't think it was going to look cute on me, but then I put it on and it so is!
In fact, I wore it when I went to Boston for the "What's Your Number?" wrap party (which was so. much. fun.) and now I have it with me in LA, too. Here I am wearing it in my "Adventures on the Amtrak" post:
So anyway, telling you about my jacket leads me to three things:
You can get 30% off your online Gap purchase today and tomorrow (ends 7/27) by entering the code SAVE30 at checkout.
I'm also going to send a lucky reader a gift certificate to get some sun bleached denim of their own from Gap. All you have to do is comment on this post (make sure you enter your email address in the email field; I'm the only person who will see it) and then tonight, around midnight LA time, I'll print out all the comments, cut them up, put them in a fish bowl and pick a winner.
I'm a BAD Gap Brand Enthusiast because I never gave away all those jeans they sent me a year ago. But I still have all of them in a pile in my apartment (along with a couple $50 gift certificates and some more gift certificates for free jeans) and I'm going to give them away when I get back from LA, I swear! (Also, I'm not making this up, but the new Gap jeans are the only jeans I wear nowadays. I like the Long & Lean the best and have gone through four pairs since they came out.)
Okay, good luck!Vanessa Simmons Veronica Kay Veronika Va?eková Victoria Beckham

Robert Rodriguez Addresses 'Deadpool' Rumors
'I got an early sneak peek at it,' 'Machete' director says of script based on the comic book character.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

While Robert Rodriguez's take on "Deadpool" could make for one very interesting comic book flick, the "Machete" director says that rumors he might direct Ryan Reynolds in the film are still nothing but rumors, even if he has read an early script for the film.
"It was really good," Rodriguez told MTV News at Comic-Con in San Diego. "It wasn't supposed to be sent out — it was one of those early drafts. They were probably like, 'Robert just finished "Predators," let's see what he thinks at this early stage' ... I got an early sneak peek at it."

Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man
I just finished Bill Clegg's Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man.
Wow. Riveting. I had to close the book at times because I couldn't bear to continue reading. I wanted to scream, "No, Bill! Don't do it! Put down the pipe!"
For those of you who don't know, Bill Clegg is a New York literary agent who became addicted to crack. Portrait of an Addict is his memoir. I hope my agent doesn't start doing crack. For more about the book, visit the official website.
Anywho, I'm going to blog more often about the books I'm reading. But I'm going to wait until I finish them to do so because I'd say for every ten books I buy, I start seven and finish three. This has less to do with the quality of the book and more to do with my lack of an attention span. I get bored really easily, so if a book doesn't move forward quickly, I'm out.Marisa Tomei Marla Sokoloff Marley Shelton Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Lady Gaga's Summer Jam Victory: Readers React
'I love most of the songs that were nominated, but 'Alejandro' is my favorite,' one fan wrote.By Kyle Anderson
Lady Gaga
Photo: Interscope Records
On Tuesday, Lady Gaga not only chatted with Larry King and unveiled the preview for her latest envelope-pushing video, but she also won yet another accolade. "Alejandro," the latest single from Gaga's The Fame Monster, took home the top prize in the MTV News Summer Jam 2010 poll, beating out strong contenders like Katy Perry's "California Gurls" and Usher's chart-topping "OMG." And while there were a handful of write-in votes and protests, most readers were enthusiastic about the crowning of the official song of summer.
"I knew she'd win," reader Kayla posted in the comments section. "I love most of the songs that were nominated, but Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' is my favorite." Shane said he was happily surprised at the success of Gaga's latest single. " 'Alejandro' is one of Gaga's best songs. I was kind of disappointed when she chose it as a single because it doesn't sound like something that mainstream American idiots can absorb. But how shocked was I!"
Reader Brandon saw the coronation of "Alejandro" as an official summer jam as the next logical step in Gaga's growing legacy. " 'Alejandro' is truly a summer song. The summer song of 2010 needs to be pop," he wrote. "Pop is what has dominated the charts for the past year. And who has been at the top of the charts for the past two years? Lady Gaga, of course."
Still, there were a handful of people who thought that despite the growing popularity of "Alejandro," it didn't have the right kind of feel to be a summer song. "I don't see how this is a summer jam," wrote jarthon. " I hear 'Alejandro' and I feel depressed. The beat is just too slow to be good for the summer."
In addition to her devoted fans, Gaga herself expressed excitement over the ascension of "Alejandro." "MTV voted ALEJANDRO Song of the Summer little monsters!" she wrote on her Twitter page. A few minutes later, she corrected herself. "So apparently the WIN: ALEJANDRO AS SUMMMER SONG 2010 was due to my rabid and luminous fans, not MTV, although they held the wonderful contest," she wrote.
Are you satisfied with Gaga's win? Keep up the summer songs debate in the comments below.

"I wanna be forever young," Beyoncé sang as fireworks erupted Friday, helping husband Jay-Z close his much-anticipated set.
2010 Coachella Music Festival
Not only was there a cavalcade of age-defying acts among the three day festival's 100-some performers, it was often the over-40 club delivering the most commanding sets, Jigga Man included.
Before Jay powered through more than 30 songs on Friday, super group Them Crooked Vultures (featuring Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme) and Street Sweeper Social Club (starring Rage Against the Machine/ Audioslave guitar hero Tom Morello) both won over large crowds — not with familiar songs, but with sheer performance flair. Ditto Thom Yorke, Faith No More, Devo, the Specials, a reunited Pavement and many more throughout the weekend.
Even Coachella itself has improved with age. Now in its 11th year, the festival set attendance records, selling out 75,000 three-day passes. (Single-day tickets were not available for the first time ever.)
Because flights were grounded overseas due to the ash cloud created by the volcanic eruption in Iceland, seven bands missed Coachella, including the Cribs and Frightened Rabbit, as well as Phoenix's light tech. "So, we're just gonna go simple and make it about the music," Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars said, before deftly staying true to that promise.
Also absent was Dr. Dre, who was widely rumored to guest during Jay-Z's set. Actually, with the exception of Beyoncé and his own 10-piece band, Hova had no guests, a bit surprising considering the tall order at hand as the festival's first hip-hop headliner. Instead, Jay relied on his own swagger and arsenal of hits, beginning with "Run This Town" and ending with, of course, "Encore."
As California first lady Maria Shriver enjoyed the set next to Beyoncé and Hayden Panettiere, video screens showed President Obama doing the "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" gesture.
After cheering from the sidelines (and enjoying a cold beer), Beyoncé took the stage with a giant smile and a punk-rock T-shirt with the Never Mind the Bullocks logo (perhaps a nod to Sex Pistol Johnny Lydon, whose Public Image Limited was playing at the next stage over).
Jay, who entered by rising from a platform below the stage, hardly played a song in its entirety and could have done more for this crowd with his rock-leaning songs like "99 Problems." At Glastonbury in 2008, after Noel Gallagher said there was no place for hip-hop at the festival, Jay opened with Oasis's "Wonderwall." His DJ played that song at Coachella too, but it felt out of place in the middle of his set and without context.
As has been his habit at concerts lately, Jay gave several shout-outs to specific crowd members. "To the guy who looks like The Situation," he said to much laughter. It was a genuine, raw moment the set needed.
It was Saturday's headliner, Muse, who clearly delivered the best performance, giving a master class in energizing an audience, beginning with a rollicking "Uprising." And just to ensure that every single person sang along to the epic tune, the words flashed behind them as singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy hit each one. Heck, the band's light and pyro show was worthy of its own Coachella slot.
Bellamy borrowed from the best throughout the 90-minute set, windmilling around the stage like Pete Townsend and picking through the national anthem like Jimi Hendrix. (The Brit also wore an American flag shirt to go along.) He even paid tribute to big band, a genre memorialized across Palm Springs, by crooning Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" from a clear grand piano.
Coachella's best cover actually came from Faith No More, whose Mike Patton took the stage in a red leisure suit and cane, and sang a deadpan rendition of Peaches and Herb's "Reunited" with the fitting chorus, "Reunited and it feels so good." Somehow the song blended right in among classics like "We Care a Lot" and "Epic." It was difficult to hear their hard-fueled rock and not think of all the bands they influenced, from System of a Down to Incubus, whose Brandon Boyd was spotted backstage.
Gorillaz headlined Sunday and got off to a good start with a video of an animated Snoop Dogg introducing the band, who appeared in the flesh. Damon Albarn was in prime vocal form, but the show lacked the visual excitement expected of the group. The animated members rarely appeared, let alone as holograms or anything else. Bonus points, however, for bringing on some real guests, including De La Soul, members of the Clash and Bobby Womack, who sings on the new single "Stylo."
Headlining Sunday's second stage was Thom Yorke, who showcased his own super group, Atoms for Peace, which includes Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. The virtuosos made Yorke's solo record The Eraser their playground, inflicting jittery beats and funky bass grooves all over the singer's wide-ranging vocals.
At first the blue-haired Flea looked almost bored, but he quickly got into the show, dancing with Yorke, or whatever you call the shaking they did many times through the 90-minute set. For an encore, Yorke returned solo and played a new song on which he layered his own vocals with looping pedals. Then he treated his fanboy audience (which included Jay-Z and Russell Simmons) to a couple of Radiohead tunes, including "Everything in Its Right Place."
Also playing late, although not intentionally, was Sly Stone, who in perfect Sly fashion, missed his 7 p.m. slot, showed up 40 minutes late to his rescheduled 10:30 slot, and then performed what could only be described as a train wreck. He ranted for 10 minutes about his old manager, stopped songs midway through, forgetting lyrics, and abruptly jumped off the stage and left. Axl Rose has got nothing on this guy.
On the opposite end of the spectrum were Matt & Kim, the band happiest to be playing Coachella, or at least the one who showed it the most. The duo recounted their favorite memories from the weekend ("Beyoncé gave me goose bumps," Matt said), shared manscaping tips and had their very own streaker ("Hooray for that man's penis!" Matt cheered). And the music was just as entertaining, like when the drum (Kim) and keys (Matt) duo broke into "Apache" during the middle of their awesome single "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare." They also pounded ferociously through Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll Part 2."
Other Sunday stand-outs included French sensation Phoenix, who gathered one of the largest crowds of the weekend and whipped them into a frenzy from the opening "Listomania" to the closing "1901" and everything in between. Spoon had the most sing-alongs, but it was Yo La Tengo and Pavement who educated the main stage audience on alternative rock's roots, while Sunny Day Real Estate, featuring Foo Fighters Nate Mendel on bass, reminded the second stage of emo's origins.
Julian Casablancas ignored the desert heat and donned a black leather jacket for a set that included both solo and Strokes material, while Miike Snow took the stage in matching black suits and white masks, looking like a scene out of a Stanley Kubrick movie, and kinda sounding like one too.
On Saturday, maybe it was that Muse and Faith No More were so good, but the highly anticipated MGMT and Dead Weather sets seemed to fall flat. Both acts waited until mid-show to play their best-known material, which can be risky when there are four other stages going at the same time.
Coheed & Cambria are not exactly hit-makers, but the MTV March Madness champions are performers and proved the perfect warm-up for FNM and Muse. For their closing, the Rush-inspired rockers brought out members of the USC marching band, adding to an already full sound.
Band of Skulls turned in a break-out set, putting a more radio-friendly spin on blues rock. Think Wolfmother or the Black Keys meets Blink-182. Other Saturday afternoon highlights included perennial partiers the Gossip (who were also remixed later in the 2 Many DJs set) and Australian newcomers the Temper Trap, whose "Sweet Disposition" was one of those perfect hot Coachella afternoon anthems.
Friday's show-stealers were Them Crooked Vultures and Street Sweeper Social Club, the former fronted by Indio's own Josh Homme, who mixed some subtly humorous banter in with his guitar shredding. While introducing the band, for instance, he said "and on pretty much everything, John Paul f---ing Jones!" The Zeppelin legend played mostly bass, but opened the show on a stand-up electric slide guitar contraption, and later took to the piano for a beautiful interlude (a nice smoke break for Homme). Grohl's drumming was ferocious from the first beat, a reminder of what Kurt Cobain saw in him years ago. The dude just loves to rock out and it shows.
Similarly, Tom Morello was on fire throughout Street Sweeper Social Club's 5 p.m. set, soloing on nearly every song, pumping his fist like he meant it and leading the charge on a masterful re-creation of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." Boots Riley could be a slightly better MC, but the band still brings something special live.
LCD Soundsystem are a special live act too, but fell a little short by playing several new songs and saving the favorites for the end. Vampire Weekend followed a similar strategy, but what hurt them most was a 10 p.m. set time. Late afternoon would have been a much better fit for their sun-soaked, eclectic song collection.
She & Him had that slot instead and owned it with a breezy, relaxed set. For an actress, Zooey Deschanel could have a little more stage presence, but her voice is angelic like Jenny Lewis, who has fit in nicely at past Coachellas.
Friday's breakout act was Sleigh Bells, a Brooklyn duo featuring Derek Miller's metal riffs and firecracker Alexis Krauss' rhymes over sampled beats. Sounds odd and very 1999, but it's infectious and fun.
And finally a special shout-out to DJ Lance Rock, who not only spun the kids' songs from his show, "Yo Gabba Gabba," but also brought along all his friends from the show. Forget Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens; Kristen Stewart, John Mayer or Katy Perry. Forget Paris Hilton, Kate Bosworth and Mischa Barton. The biggest celebrities at the fest were the felt favorites Muno, Broobee and Foofa.

Beyonce To Perform at White House State Dinner Tonight
Obama favorite will be joined by Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Beyoncé will perform Wednesday night (May 19) at the White House State Dinner along with Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. The stars will entertain dignitaries on the White House South Lawn following the dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderón.
Beyoncé, who has rocked stages around the world, is no stranger to performing for the first family. In 2009, the superstar hit the stage at the We Are One inaugural concert and serenaded President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama during the couple's first dance following Barack Obama's historic inauguration. Beyoncé and her mogul husband, Jay-Z — who is fairly chummy with the leader of the free world — made headlines earlier this year when the couple visited the White House with R&B star Trey Songz in tow.
Acoustic-guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela will also perform at the dinner. However, unlike Beyoncé, the performance marks the pair's first time at the White House. The duo tweeted earlier Wednesday, "Just landed in DC ... in a little while we'll do soundcheck at the White House for 2moro's performance. Never been there b4 as tourist either."
Rodrigo y Gabriela, who have gone from heavy-metal fans to street performers to world-music stars, will tour the world this summer in support of their latest album, 11:11. Despite performing at the White House for the first time, the pair seem confident about the show and tweeted some words of encouragement to President Obama and President Calderón as the world leaders apparently handled some official business earlier Wednesday. "2nd soundcheck at White House today at 3 30 ... gig's around 9! I think the 2 presidents are in an official meeting right now....good luck."
Fans who want to experience the evening don't need an official invite. The performances and a toast from Presidents Obama and Calderón will be streamed live on the White House website.
